About the book –
“Summer in the City” is a monograph of a series of paintings that apposes self-portraits as First Ladies with guns and fun-in-the-sun. By combining handguns with traditional summer pleasures such as reading, swimming, biking, or baseball, Summer in the City takes the American obsession with packing heat to its logical and darkly humorous conclusion. Sadly, this work becomes more relevant each day.
In addition to reproductions of all thirty paintings, the monograph includes an essay by curator Yulia Tikhonova and foreward by Balinda Fiebiger of Enlightening Publishers, who conceived the book –
“I felt the need to publish this series of paintings in a monograph, so the work could be seen by more people than in just a fleeting gallery experience.”

FIRST, SHE’S A LADY!
OPENING RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST
THURSDAY JUNE 18TH 6-8 PM
We are thrilled to present the first comprehensive New York show of Laura Elkins’ recent paintings. Originally inspired by her first visit to the White House, where she discovered the official first lady portraits, Ms. Elkins has spent the last 15 years devoted to portraying these women (collectively known as FLOTUS) in a series of self-portraits that are a journey of painterly and personal discovery, and a wry commentary on our complex political and social mores.
Elkins’ devotion to America’s First Ladies is inherently fascinating. Variously shape-shifting from Hillary to Michelle and back to Grace Coolidge and Eleanor Roosevelt, she has produced an exhilarating body of work that is simultaneously personal and political, provocative and profound; painterly and graphic; serious and ludic; topical and universal; feminist and feminine; alienating and seductive; sexy and demur; phenomenologically inspired… fearless… unforgettable.
Please note that our gallery will be open to the public on Sunday June 21st from 1-5 PM as part of Harlem Days/Harlem Nights 3rd Sunday.
