Mid-Century Modern

From 2000 until 2008, I confined The White House Collection to mid-century modern First Ladies, such as Mamie, Lady Bird, Jackie, and Eleanor. Initially, I used these icons of American matronage to investigate notions of power, femininity, sexuality, and aging. Over time I integrated personal, political, and catastrophic events into the work, such as painting myself as Mamie with ashes in response to the 9/11 attacks, or as Lady Bird and Mamie submerged, as if the White House were flooded, in response to Hurricane Katrina and global warming.
